1. the act of clearing: »

2. a) a clear space; distance between things that pass by each other without touching: »

There was only a foot of clearance between the top of the truck and the roof of the tunnel.

b) the space between the piston and cylinder head in an engine on dead center. c) the distance by which the point of a tooth on a gearwheel misses the bottom of the space between teeth on the mating gear.
3. Figurative. the act or process of certifying that a person considered for a position of trust is reliable.
4. = clearance sale. (Cf.clearance sale)
5. a) the meeting of requirements to get a ship or cargo free on entering or leaving a port. b) Also, clearance papers. the certificate showing this: »

6. Banking. the exchanging of checks and bills and settling of accounts between different banks through a clearing house.
